What is ideal semen and sperm count?

Semen and sperm are the most important liquids in the human body after blood and water. Semen is a whitish liquid that is ejected from the penis during ejaculation. The goal of semen is to carry the sperm required for reproduction into the female reproductive system.

Semen is made up of liquid from the testicles, seminal vesicles, prostrate gland and urethral glands. The normal semen volume per ejaculate is 2 to 5 ml. Semen that is regularly below 1.5 ml is called hypospermia. Semen that is above 5.5 ml is called hyperspermia.

The World Health Organisation has released the following as normal sperm count behaviour:

1. The quantity of sperm should be at least 20 million per ml.

2. The semen content should be at least 2ml.

3. The total number of sperm in the ejaculate should be at least 40 million.

4. At least 75% of the sperm should be alive

5. At least 30 per cent of the sperm should be of normal shape and form.

6. At least 25 per cent of the sperm should be swimming with rapid forward movement.
