All about Semen Analysis!!

A semen analysis involves measuring the amount of semen a man produces. Semen analysis determines the number and quality of sperm in the semen sample. This analysis is usually done to identify whether a man has infertility problem or not. Infertility is defined as the inability of a man to become father. This sexual inability is may be due to certain reasons like low sperm count, low sperm motility, low sperm quality etc which can be determined by semen analysis.

There are several tests which may be performed during semen analysis like:-

Liquefaction time: At the time of ejaculation semen is a thick gel however after ejaculation it becomes liquid within 20 minutes. Thus liquefaction time measures the time required by semen to liquefy.

Volume: Measures the quantity of semen present in one ejaculation

Sperm morphology: It determines the percentage of sperm that have a normal shape

Sperm count: It determines the number of sperms present per milliliter (mL) of semen.

Sperm motility: It determines the percentage of sperm that can move forward normally.

pH: This test measures the acidity or alkalinity of the semen.

Fructose level: Normally semen contains a sugar known as fructose. Thus this test measure the amount of fructose present in semen.

Furthermore semen analysis determines whether a vasectomy or the reversal of vasectomy has been successful or not and
